Abstract: Portable radiation monitoring instruments are widely used to evslwte the hazards involved when working with ionizinq radiation. The instruments must be sensitive, ruqqed, readily portable, and convenient to use. Two qeneral types of instrtmJents exist: those to measure fields of radiation and those that detect radioactive contamination. The instruments must meet various requirements including temprature independence, the proper response to various energies of radiation, the proper directional respnse, and battery voltage indepndence.
