Abstract: The Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division is a public utility serving over 200,000 customers in Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee. We have over 14,000.000 feet of main in our distribution system. Our primary distribution pressure is 99 psi but we have approximately 20% of our system operating at 30 psi and 15% operating at 7-10 inches of water column. In 1967 we began to experiment with the use of PVC as a replacement pipe for mains in our 30 psi system. Approximately 100,000 feet of PVC was installed for mains and services using solvent cement and mechanical couplings for the joints.
