Abstract: In 1946, just a few months after the close of World War II, we were told that we were on the threshold of a new era in energy. We had progressed from wood in the 17th century, to coal in the 18th and to gas in the 19th. Now gas would become a thing of the past as our generating plants produced electricity so cheaply and so abundantly that every home owner in American would use electricity for every domestic purpose. We would even be driving automobiles with motors powered by an atomic battery no bigger than the size of a tobacco can. What happened?
