Title: Athabasca Tar Sands And Its Role In The North American Energy Crisis

Abstract: In choosing the words energy crisis in the title I was responding to the current press treatment of a situation of concern to North Americans. In my opinion it is not a crisis but instead a situation requiring change both as to source of energy supply and price structure-a situation where distinct alternatives can be identified. Because of this situation a growing interest in synthetic fuels is rapidly developing, whether they are derived from coal, shale, or tar sands. In this respect, I would like to focus attention on the Athabasca tar sands of Alberta.
