Abstract: This occasion presents an opportunity to engage you who represent the gas distribution and transmission industry in a dialogue about the safety of gas pipelines and to present my views and those of the Administration I represent on our Federal Pipeline Safety Program. Your industry has long provided the businesses and consumers of our country with a cost efficient means of transporting natural gas which is necessary to our present quality of life. And, despite the hazardous characteristics of natural gas and many liquid products, pipeline transportation is by far and away the safest and most environmentally acceptable mode of transportation in existence today.
