Abstract: The wind tunnel facilities and equipment used for air speed calibrations at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) are described with details of the tunnels construction and their performance characteristics. The mathematical relationships for air speed computations are shown and error budgets for both the Pitot-static tube and Laser Doppler anemometer (LDA) measuring systems are discussed. The performance relationships for these two systems and the advantages of each are presented. Examples are given to show the method for accounting for changes in fluid density by including the effects of pressure, temperature, and humidity. A relationship is given for computing air speed from Pitot-static tube measurements, including the effects of compressibility. Random uncertainty analysis for the air speed relationships is discussed and quantified using the NIST conditions. The associated systematic error estimates are discussed in terms of round-robin assessment methods.
