Abstract: A delta reclamation districts plan to add significant fill on their levee caused great concern for the integrity of a critical PG&E 22-inch (559 mm) gas transmission line which crosses this geologically unstable area. Initially a conventional linear elastic analysis was performed, yielding results significantly above the elastic limit for steel at several locations. Considering the limits of current stress- based codes and the settlement controlled loading conditions, a decision was made to perform a state-ofthe- art fitness-for-service investigation from a strain-based perspective. This paper describes the development and implementation of that investigation process, utilizing the latest technology in pipeline inspection and structural analysis.
