Abstract: Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America (NGPL) has been involved in the automation of its compressor stations since the mid 1960s. Using minicomputer based systems, we have been successful in automating 14 stations on our Amarillo Pipeline and 13 on our Gulf Coast Pipeline. Each of these systems reports data to a master station computer located in the Gas Control center of NGPLs Chicago Office. NGPL is the transmission subsidiary of Peoples Gas Company, Chicago. The minicomputers exercise station control via gas controller directives. Some of the major functions performed are station starting and stopping, engine starting and stopping, and compressor loading and unloading. Additionally, the station is constantly monitored and controlled to achieve safe and efficient operation.
