Abstract: Automation, bar coding, sonic nozzles, and robotics are all making their way into the workplace. This paper gives you an overview of these technologies and how they can be used in the meter repair industry. New perspectives for conceiving and implementing these systems in the meter shop will also be discussed. The benefits received and the practicality of implementing these new systems will depend on your operation. Items such as repair schedules, budget and shop size will be deciding factors as to what systems are workable and which are not. Southern California Gas Companys meter repair shop in Pico Rivera repairs and outtests 130,000 to 185,000 meters per year. Approximately 300,000 to 350,000 meters are also intested each year at this facility. The Meter Shop workforce fluctuates between 86 and 115 meter mechanics, depending on the repair schedule. Although not all of the systems discussed are currently in place and operating in Southern California Gas Companys repair shop, they are continuing to proceed and will soon utilize the complete operation as described in this paper.
