Abstract: The American Petroleum Institute was founded in 1919 as an outgrowth of the National Petroleum Wir Committee. Thai committee was comprised of U.S. oil industry leaders who worked together with the federal government to ineet the iremendous demand for petroleum fuel during World War 1. The experience demonslraled that oil industry representatives could work together on common problems affecting the industry aiid slill compete with one another in the miuketplace.
