Abstract: The monetary value of natural gas it determined not only by volume, but also by its quality (heating value). Natural Gas is made up of numerous constituents each with different qualities. Consider metals: Should a pound of gold be considered of equal worth as a pound of copper? If a box of mixed metals is to be sold, wouldnt it be wise for the buyer and seller to understand the mix? This is the nature of the energy industry. Typically the energy potential of a gas is expressed in British Thermal Units (BTU), or the amount of energy required to heat one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. BTU value is usually determined by separating and measuring the various constituents of a gas in a technique called Chromatography.
