Abstract: Existing residential water heater sizing guidelines contained in the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) 1991 Applications Handbook and Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)/Federal Housing Administration (FHA) minimum housing standards were developed in an era when the setpoint temperature of the water heater was typically around 150 F.
