Title: Cast Iron Main Break Predictive Models

Abstract: ABSTRACT For any gas utility with a significant amount of cast iron main, circumferential breaks are a high-risk operational concern. This paper discusses the development of cast iron main break predictive models at PSE&G. These models encompass the effects of weather, soil corrosivity, installation vintage, and annual replacement. The models can easily be developed by other utilities since they are comprised primarily of information that is readily accessible to the utility. While these models will not produce a segment-by-segment replacement priority listing, they will highlight geographic areas or cast iron vintages which are more at risk to break than others. The utility can then use this information to increase the effectiveness of its overall maintenance plan.
