Abstract: The influences of transducer diffraction effects on measured USM transit times are investigated, in relation to dry calibration methods and consequences for the USM measurement accuracy in flow calibration and field operation. Diffraction effects depend on a number of operational factors. The magnitude of such systematic effects is evaluated using a plane piston model and finite element modelling of the vibration and radiation of typical USM piezoelectric transducers. Consequences for volumetric, mass and energy flow measurement using USMs are evaluated.
