Abstract: Prior to 1968, the safety standard for gas pipelines and mains that was accepted by most states was the ANSI Code for Pressure Piping, Gas Transmission and Distribution Piping Systems B31 . 8 . On August 12, 1968, the Natural Gas Pipeline Safety Act became effective which required the Secretary of Transportation to adopt interim rules within three months, and to establish minimum federal standards within twenty-four months.
