Abstract: In-house capability for instrument calibration always carries with it a certain degree of capability for performance of other elements of instrument service such as repair, routine maintenance, receiving inspection/test, modification, and evaluation. While calibration per se can sometimes be accomplished as well or better by commercial laboratories, it is the totality of secondary capabilities that many times tips the scales in favor of having and retaining full in-house capability. None of these items is of major importance individually, but taken together they contribute substantially to the utility and flexibility of the test equipment inventory.
