Abstract: Controllers are a familiar sight in most industrial operations. The performance of these important components determines the quality of performance provided by a complete control system. Optimum performance results from understanding fundamental relationships of controller actions and making the proper adjustments to suit the process. Most standard controllers have three common modes of operation: proportional mode, reset or integral mode, and rate or derivative mode. This paper will discuss the effects of each mode and the corresponding construction of a controller. Controllers measure a signal from a measuring element. This input signal represents the value of a process variable, whether it is at steady state or changing. Pneumatic controllers utilize compressed air as the supply of the signal.
