Abstract: Modulation meters have many applications, the most common being the measurement of Frequency Modulation and Amplitude Modulation. The conventional method has been to use a manually tunable modulation meter that has to be set to a precise carrier frequency plus the IF frequency. The level then has to be set and the modulation meter finely retuned before any measurements are made. This can be tedious particularly when several frequencies have to be covered such as testing a signal generator or a multi channel radio. This paper describes the use of sampling techniques to achieve automatic measurement of both FM and AM.
