Abstract: During the past year, personnel in the Electra-Optics/Laser Technology Research Group at the Naval Postgraduate School have been committed to the task of providing descriptions of the marine environment with respect to laser propagations. Primary objectives of the . project include acquisition of environmental data from the marine boundary layer and the subsequent determination of similarity expressions for the characterization of optical transmissions therein. Of note with respect to Naval applications of laser technology is the fact that existent similarity parameters which pertain to laser propagation in the atmosphere have only been recently validated in overland tests. Hence, nominal data exists concerning the effects of air-sea interactions upon optical transmissions in the marine environment. In this regard, the interdisciplinary effort in electrooptics at NPS, is significant since fundamental meteorological and optical measurements are being performed throughout each phase of the research.
