Abstract: In order to make a study of the various methods and types or apparatus used for the determination of the specific gravity of gas, it will be well, first, to see what the specific gravity really means, and why it is necessary to determine the specific gravity. In the first place, let us distinguish between the meanings of density and specific gravity of gas. In chemistry and physics, the definition of density is the weight of matter per unit volume of a substance whereas, the general definition for specific gravity is the ratio of the density of a substance to the density of some other substance chosen as the standard. In the case of gases, the standard might be oxygen, hydrogen, or air, and the commonly accepted standard, particularly in regard to gas measurement in the industrial field, is air.
