Abstract: The flow field in a typical toroidal Venturi nozzle, operating at critical conditions and shaped according to the recommendations of the ISO Standard 9300, has been investigated using numerical flow simulation. The present study focused on the transitional effects in the boundary layer, occuring at a Reynolds number of approximately one million when it changes its character between laminar and turbulent. Therefore, the computations were carried out for a range of Reynolds numbers between 8 105 and 4 106. The present results were compared with experimental data where available. The unsteady compressible viscous flow in the nozzles was simulated using the Navier-Stokes solver ACHIEVE, developed by the first author. Several models for predicting the laminar-turbulent transition were tested. Significant phenomena associated with the transition were observed, having an influence on the discharge coefficient.
