Abstract: There is a rapidly increasing demand for energy in the western world. Most of the near-term increase will continue to be met by oil and gas. As a result, we are extending our search for petroleum deposits into more hostile environments such as deeper horizons, remote locations, the Arctic and offshore. The move to the offshore is reflected by the upward trend in offshore oil production. Figure 1 shows that 20 years ago only about 5% of the free worlds total oil production came from offshore areas. Today, this figure is approaching 20% and is increasing at a rapid rate.
