Abstract: The objective of this paper is to discuss the types of communication systems used to collect measurement data from the meter site and to communicate with a central computer. It is targeted to individuals who are looking at designing or adding remote communications to their gas measurement system. The intent is to provide an overview of how a communication system works and operates. We will discuss what questions to ask before designing the sytem. The different technologies available and some of the key areas which effect the overall design, installation and operation of a remote communication system in a gas measurement environment.
