Abstract: This paper will deal with the experience of TransCanada PipeLines in selecting, training. and operating with a synthetic lubricant of the phosphate ester type in gas turbines. Synthetic lubricant is usually a term applied to a lubricating fluid which is not derived from a natural hydrocarbon base. Such fluids include silicones, water/oil emulsions, glycols polyphenyls, and phosphate esters. There are a large variety of products made from these fluids all of which are tailored to their particular application requirement. Most synthetic fluids are selected because of operating characteristics, particular requirements supply or pricing. Not all of these are suitable for gas turbines.
