Abstract: Gas utility service personnel, HVAC contractor and others such as fire departments are frequently called upon to conduct field evaluation of combustion emission products, specifically carbon monoxide (CO). More recently, consumer interest has emerged concerning field measurement of nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Field measurement challenges relate to measurement of these combustion products in the indoor air and emissions from the appliance themselves. Proper field assessment of emission levels involves addressing this separate but related issues. This paper addresses two-step protocol based on the systematic field measurement of pollutant concentrations in ambient air and the proper interpretation of the data in terms of appliance emission limits in certification standards and ambient indoor exposure levels. Step one evaluates whether the appliance is performing to current appliance standards. Step two predicts what the long-term pollutant concentration would be from extended appliance operation and is undertaken if step one is determined to provide insufficient information on health and safety to the gas customer.
