Abstract: National Fuel Gas operates 12,275 miles of pipeline serving 700,000 customers in western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania. The three major metropolitan areas of Buffalo, Niagara Falls, and Erie, Pa., are included in this area. The central portions of these cities have facilities dating back to the I860s: a large portion of the annual capital investment and operating budget is therefore spent on system replacement. In the mid-60s, the company began to replace services using plastic insertion. In 1968. NFG investigated systems for main replacement by insertion. Steel pipe was vetoed because of problems in preventing and elimination casing shorts. Use of plastic would make cathodic protection monitoring and maintenance unnecessary.
