Title: Minnesota Gas Company Peat Gasification Program

Abstract: Peat, a geologically young coal, has been used as a fuel for centuries, and in the last few decades has become an important industrial fuel in a number of European countries. Peat presently accounts for about 25 percent of Irelands energy supply and for about 2 percent of (he total energy supply of the Soviet Union. Peat has never been an important source of energy in the U.S. in the past, due to the low cost of other available fuels. Recent increases in energy costs make peal an attractive source of energy at present. This caused Minnesota Gas Company (Minnegasco) in 1974 to become interested in peat as a source of Synthetic Natural Gas.
