Abstract: Since the use of microprocessor technology became widespread in the 1970s, the functional capability of proving instruments has increased dramatically. Early proving instruments were merely counters that could be gated on and off by the detector switches mounted on a meter prover. Modern instruments still provide the basic counting function but have the capability to automate the entire process.
