Abstract: Pipelines are the safest method for transporting hydrocarbon fluids compared to trucking, rail or marine transportation. Nevertheless, current North American statistics indicates that liquid petroleum pipeline leaks occur at the rate of about one (1) leak per year per thousand miles of line.
