Abstract: On April 1,1982, the Department of Transportation published the final rule requiring gas pipeline operators to have or participate in a damage prevention program. Among the requirements included in the rule, the program must provide for notification of the public in the vicinity of the pipeline, and for notification of the persons who normally engage in excavation activities in the area in which the pipeline is located. This paper examines the effectiveness, as perceived by the gas pipeline operators, of various means of providing the required notifications and promotion of a damage prevention program.
