Abstract: Probably a better title for this paper would have been Communication System Alternatives, as this implies a broader connotation. That is what the communication manager today is faced with many alternatives in providing the best communication system at the most reasonable cost. A bit of history is in order to put this paper in the proper perspective. We have not always had the wide choices that are available today. Where we came from and how we got here is as interesting a story as the one about alternate choices. Immediately after World War II, there was a rapid expansion of the natural gas transmission and distribution systems. Along with that expansion was the need for communication services.
