Abstract: The recording instruments most commonly used in the gas industry are in their order of importance as follows: Orifice Meters, Recording Pressure Gauges and Recording Thermometers. Generally, the installation and maintenance of these insturments are under the supervision of the Gas Measurement Department, and the Field Meter Men are usually responsible for their installation, care and operation. They are charged with the Instrument layout and proper installation so that reliable measurements may be obtained. Not only should the Field Meter Man be familiar with the technical and practical installation wrinkles but he should also be familiar with the design and construction of the instruments. All manufacturers prepare and distribute very complete instructions and technical description of their instruments, and the Meter Man should really study these instructions. It will save him much trouble when difficulties arise. Since other papers are being presented on specific instruments of the above classifications, this paper will briefly define each of the instruments enumerated and discuss their general method of installation, calibration and maintenance.
