Abstract: This paper describes the procedures used in conduciing the field examination portion of a pipeline failure investigation, including the ba.sis for the selection of samples and the information that may be helpful in determining the cause of a failure. The field portion of the investigation is divided into four steps: 1. Surveying the failure site and fracture to define the nature of the fracture 2. Locating the fracture origin or origins 3. Estimating the probable cause 4. Selecting appropriate samples for detailed laboratory examination
