Abstract: Underground gas distribution systems in the United States and Canada at the time they were converted to natural gas were very similar in age, type of rraterials and construction. However, since conversion, many of the old small diameter, low pressure mains in urban areas have been replaced with larger capacity mains constructed to modern standards. Original larger diameter cast iron mains have been reconditioned by external clanping, internal sealing techniques and by the insertion or lining with plastic pipe.
