Abstract: Travel expenses do not normally get recognized as a major business expense, but they represent the third largest controllable expense following labor/benefits and material/equipment expenditures. The management of your travel function relates to three major areas. These are: (1) Establish a corporate travel policy, (2) Know when and how personnel travel, and (3) Establish an effective travel reservation system. Columbia Gas System followed these principles in consolidating seven different and independent travel functions into one consolidated network. The network utilizes one travel agency or a hub for seven onsite travel reservation officers equipped with computer terminal and ticket printer.
