Abstract: Natural gas is composed of hydrocarbons, that is, compounds consisting of the elements carbon and hydrogen, chemically combined, and nitrogen, carbon dioxide, water vapor, hydrogen sulfide, and organic sulfur compounds will combine with oxygen in the usual process of combustion to produce heat. Artificial gases consist of various mixtures of hydrocarbons, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, carbon disulfide, organic sulfur compounds, and ammonia as combustibles, and nitrogen, carbon dioxide, water vapor, oxygen, and small quantities of rare gases such as argon as inerts. The major combustibles in fuel gas are hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen.
