Abstract: It is not known where or when orifiee plates were firsi used for Row measurement. Over 2,000 years ago, however, the Romans had installed constrictive type flow metering devices in the branch lines from their main aqueduct system supplying Rome. Substantial income was derived from charges based on this metering and was used for the upkeep and further improvement of the system. The use of the concentric, flat plate orifice for the purchase or sale of fluids came about in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Since that time, we have seen its use grow to the point where it has become the principle means for the measurement of flow in closed conduits in the United States today.
