Abstract: The compressibility factor is a ubiquitous concept that is used in many engineering applications and measurement practices. At a basic level the compressibility factor is a correction factor. It corrects a value estimated from an ideal mathematical model to a value that is more consistent with a measured value, presumably a more accurate one than the ideal value. At a deeper level compressibility is a measure of intermolecular forces exerted between molecules at various temperature and pressure conditions. Embedded in this very basic description are multiple layers of data, complexity and uncertainty. Unfortunately the background, mathematical methods, tools, descriptions and data associated with the compressibility factor obscure its basic simplicity.
