Abstract: The public as a whole derives direct and indirect benefits from the production and use of liquefied gaseous fuels (LGFs). These benefits accrue from a wide range of uses including transportation and domestic fuels, fertilizers, and feedstocks for numerous industrial processes. Industries that supply these materials have developed sophisticated safety technology and procedures as a result of many years of operational experience and the controlling influence of industry-generated standards and government regulations. However, it is clear that benefits derived from using LGFs are accompanied by a finite level of risk if they are accidentally released or improperly handled. The potential hazards associated with accidental LGF releases include burns, asphyxiation, fire, explosions, and toxic effects.
