Abstract: Utility fleet managers use a variety of methods in determining when to replace their vehicle and equipment fleets. This paper highlights the main strategies that they use, summarizes current utility practices regarding age and mileage replacement criteria, and explains the key elements of applying economic life cycle analysis for replacement decisions. Also, four examples of economic life cycles analysis are described: the first two for determining replacement guidelines before vehicles go into service and, the third and fourth for evaluating vehicles after they have gone into service.
