Abstract: The electronic flow computer is revolutionizing flow measurement for gas pipeline and transmission companies. Chart recorders are being displaced by low cost, miniature field computers which analyze and record the flowing conditions in a gas stream hundreds of times a second, compute the volume and integrate the values into a total volume which can be summarized by the minute, hour, day or month. No matter what the primary measuring device happens to be, it can be connected to a flow computer and its information transmitted back to a host system for archival, recalculation and reporting purposes. Many flow computers handle multiple runs, or meters, so the efficiencies and the economics of flow computers are made even more attractive. And there is less windshield time for operators and technicians because data can be collected electronically and transmitted back to the host via radio, satellite or land line.
