Abstract: The specific weight of gas is the number of units of weight in a unit volume, where as specific gravity isthe ratio of weight of a definite volume of gas to the weight of an equal volume of dry air, free from all carbon dioxide and measured at the same temperature and pressure. Theoretically, specific gravity of a gas may be defined as the ratio of molecular weight of a gas, or a mixture of gases, to molecular weight of dry air. Specific weight is a measurement of the relative weights of gases and va/ies according to the conditions under which it is determined, where as specific gravity compares all gases to dry air as the standard. From a comparison of the above definitions, it is seen that specific gravity is the ratio of the specific weight of a gas to the specific weight of dry air, both being at the same conditions of temperature and pressure. It should be noted that specific gravity is temperature and pressure dependent.
