Abstract: Government regulations require that hazardous pollutants emitted from smokestacks be continuously measured The amount a greenhouse gas (GHG) or other pollutant emitted from a smokestack equals the bulk mass flow multiplied by the concentration Smokestacks are instrumented with Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) to measure both flow and concentration - CEMS flow meter - CEMS instrumentation to measure concentration Shortcomings of existing smokestack flow measurement methods - CEMS flow measurement methods and technologies have not been quantified against documented flow standards ( i . e . , not traceable) - CO 2 emissions measurement estimated to be between 10 % and 20 % To assess GHG mitigation efforts requires accurate emissions measurements If future regulations are established for GHGs than reduced uncertainty measurements will likely be necessary
