Abstract: The easily recognizable smell of odorants in natural gas signal leaks in transport or distribution pipelines, breakdowns of natural gas appliances or failures in odorization equipment itself. Odorizing of natural gas thus provides a safety net for the public and the natural gas industry. United States and Canada legislated odorant use in 1937 after a tragic accident in London, Texas claimed 293 lives, mostly school children.
