Abstract: We live in an exciting time, a time of change and ferment in our daily lives, in our society, and in the economic and political dimensions of our world. It is a time of change driven by technology. Before I undertake to defend and expand on that statement, I should describe what 1 mean by technology. Technology is equivalent to saying: We know how to do something. We know how to formulate PVC resins, write efficient software, operate a high pressure pipeline safely with automated control. Technology is not: a new product, a patentable invention, or a scientific discipline. Technology implies exploiting understanding -often based on a scientific or engineering discipline -to do something useful.
