Abstract: Competition has had and will continue to have a transforming impact on local gas distribution companys traditional gas measurement functions. The traditional role of this function has been broadened from its primary mission of installing, measuring , and maintaining the accuracy of primarily mechanical regulators, metering devices and correctors. It now also encompasses the processing of hourly gas usage data from smart field devices up to several times a day to support retail access information needs of large industrial and commercial customers and their marketers, as well as internal utility sales, billing, and distribution system information management functions. This information allows for more efficient decision making by all parties involved in the process with the end result of allowing customers to have choices that give them the opportunity to lower their energy costs.
