Abstract: Temperature is one of the more critical variables which must be precisely measured to reliably quantify natural gas. This is especially true in custody transfer applications since small temperature measurement errors can have a significant economic impact. The technical aspects of thermometry in flow measurement can best be applied to practical situations by first understanding the relationship between temperature and the fundamental gas laws, and then using this knowledge to design, install, and operate temperature measurement systems. Correct temperature determination is crucial in liquid and gas measurement, and some of the issues addressed here may be applied to both fluids. For the most part, however, gas temperature measurement is the focus of this paper.
