Abstract: An uprating is a procedure for increasing the maximum allowable operating pressure (MAOP) on a pipeline. A distribution uprating then is a procedure for increasing the MAOP on a distribution system. The purpose of this paper is to first develop the rationale behind using a distribution uprating as an alternative to pressure reinforcement mains and, secondly, to describe our experiences at Washington Gas in performing a large-scale uprating on a distribution system.
