Abstract: Safety culture and commitment at Consumers Energy (formerly Consumers Power Company) has earned the utility a national award for being Americas safest combination gas and electric utility in ten of the last twelve years. The National Safety Councils first place award has been presented to Consumers Energy for 1984, 1985, 1987 through 1990, and 1992 through 1995. Consumers Energy was also recently selected as an American Gas Association Best Practice company due to its excellent safety record and a dramatic decrease in the number of lost workday incidents. This paper addresses some of the critical elements behind the improvement.
