Abstract: The gas industry is fortunate in having a wide variety of measurement equipment available tp satisfy nearly every application need. Metering is no exception there are quite a few types of flowmeters in service. The bulk of gas measurement in North American, however, is handled by four basic types of meters diaphragm, rotary, turbine and orifice meters. As with any other choice, there are trade-offs to be made in selecting one type of meter over another in order to obtain the specific characteristics required for a specific application. Knowing the strengths and weaknesses of each type of meter is fundamental to the gas measurement engineer. This paper reviews the fundamental principles of turbine meters and compares them to diaphragm, rotary and orifice meters.
